1/1  The History of Catalina Island Exhibition - permanent installation

1/20  Annual Avalon Benefit 50K/50 Mile Run
The 36th annual 50 mile run 12 hour cutoff (course will be closed at 5:00pm) crosses Catalina Island from Avalon to Two Harbors and back! Run where the buffalo roam through the island's interior and see both sides of the island. Proceeds from the run benefit local island charities. 2/24  37th Annual Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup
USC's Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber and Wrigley Institute for Enfironmental Studies, Catalina Conservancy Divers are proud to host this 36th annual event. This is the only time scuba diving is allowed in Avalon Bay, with 500+ expected volunteer divers collecting trash and debris. 3/2  First Fridays at the Museum (First Friday of each month)
Be the first to experience the Catalina Island Museum’s outdoor amphitheater during First Fridays at the Museum on March 3rd. The inaugural film screening in the Ackerman Family Amphitheater will feature Raiders of the Lost Ark. 3/4  An Evening with Oscar

4/21 - 8/19  JAWS: The Art of Fear in Filmmaking
Immerse yourself in the creative vision and artistic direction behind the movie JAWS. From the collection of the film’s Production Designer, Joe Alves, comes the original storyboard drawings, scouting photos, behind-the-scenes photographs of the film crew in action, plus original props and ephemera from the film. 5/5 - 9/26  Houdini: Terror on the Magic Isle
Escape artist Harry Houdini delved into the magic of moviemaking toward the end of his career. This unique exhibition focuses on the 1920 adventure film Terror Island in which he starred. Ephemera and movie props from the film made on Catalina Island, nicknamed The Magic Isle, will be on display. The exhibition highlights a real-life occurrence in Catalina’s waters that placed Houdini in a precarious situation that ended in mystery. 10am-5pm daily. 310.510.2414, CatalinaMuseum.org

5/5  Kentucky Derby Days at El Galleon

The 16th annual Avalon Ball is an enchanted evening of dancing starting at 6pm in the beautiful Casino Ballroom, with Dean Mora’s Orchestra playing tunes from the 1920’s and 1930’s. 5/19  31st Annual Silent Film Benefit & Art Auction featuring Terror Island (1920)
Harry Houdini stars as an inventor who travels to the South Seas, where there is buried treasure belonging to a girl. The girl’s father is being held captive by cannibals until she returns a pearl that belongs to one of their idols. Terror Island was filmed on Santa Catalina Island. The Silent Film Benefit provides the rare opportunity to experience cinema the way it was originally intended, with live musical accompaniment in a grand movie palace. Period dress is encouraged. 6/20  Movies at the Museum - Catalina Caper (1967)
This annual summer program takes advantage of the Catalina Island Museum’s outdoor amphitheater and Avalon’s beautiful summer nights. Catalina Island and magic are the main themes for this summer’s film series. The first selection is Catalina Caper, about a scroll that is stolen from a Los Angeles museum and taken to Catalina Island. Comedian Jerry Lewis stars in The Geisha Boy. Lewis plays a down on his luck magician who is sent with his pet and co-star, Harry the rabbit, overseas to entertain the troops. This annual summer program takes advantage of the Catalina Island Museum’s outdoor amphitheater and Avalon’s beautiful summer nights. Catalina Island and magic are the main themes for this summer’s film series. The Wizard of Oz is a Technicolor musical fantasy. Judy Garland stars as Dorothy Gale, who is swept away by a tornado from a farm in Kansas to the magical land of Oz. 8/15  Movies at the Museum - JAWS (1975)
This annual summer program takes advantage of the Catalina Island Museum’s outdoor amphitheater and Avalon’s beautiful summer nights. Catalina Island and magic are the main themes for this summer’s film series. A giant great white shark terrorizes the shores of a New England beach town at the height of its summer season. The local sheriff teams up with a marine biologist, played by Richard Dreyfuss, and a gritty old fisherman to hunt down the monster. 9/8 - 9/9  59th Annual Catalina Channel Crossing US Outrigger Championships
Come out and see the women finish the longest Polynesian canoe race in the continental U.S., 26 miles from Newport Beach to Avalon, on Saturday, at Casino Point. Then enjoy the after race Hawaiian festivities at the center of town; including music and beer garden. On Sunday watch the men start their race back to Newport Beach from Lovers Cove. 9/8  Catalina Island Airport-in-the-Sky End of Summer BBQ

9/14 - 9/16  60th Annual Catalina Festival of Art
One of the longest running and most acclaimed art festivals in California! Artists from all over the country exhibit along Crescent Avenue and sell their works of fine art, sculpture, fine crafts & photography. Highlights include charity art auction and kids art show. 9/15  Catalina Island Women's Forum Wine Festival

The Catalina Film Institute’s annual celebration of film features more than 100 films, nightly events and entertainment. 10/6  When Sugar Loaf Stood: Paintings of Catalina Island before 1919

The longest running Smooth Jazz festival in America since 1987. 10/13  Windward Beach Cleanup (2nd Saturday each month)
Volunteer in the great outdoors while combing the sand for debris to help keep our windward beaches pristine. Clean-up locations (Shark Harbor, Little Harbor, Ben Weston and Cottonwood) rotate throughout the year. Catalina Island Conservancy.

10/18  Fall Fest
Live music, food, games, hayrides, pumpkin patch on the beach, and much more! Join the Avalon community from 5-9pm along Crescent Avenue (Front Street) as they raise money for local charities and kick off the Fall season. Fun for the whole family! 10/18 - 10/21  32nd Annual Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival
Join us for the 31st Annual Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival, the longest running Smooth Jazz festival in America. The Big Draw LA is part of a worldwide, month-long movement designed to provide opportunities for people of all ages to come together and draw. Visitors to the museum will lend their creativity and collaborative spirit in a guided art experience led by a visiting artist. 10/31  Halloween Costume Party at El Galleon
Join the wacky and outrageous fun at El Galleon's annual Halloween Karaoke Costume Party. Karaoke party starts at 9pm, where you can sing all the monster favorites with over 20,000 songs to choose from! Vote on your favorite costumes with 1st prize winning a Lobster Dinner for Two. Happy Hour from 3pm-6pm and Sunset Dinner Specials available from 5pm-7pm. No cover charge, must be 21 and over. More info.

11/2  Day of the Dead Ofrenda
In celebration of the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), the Catalina Island Museum will erect an ofrenda in its lobby decorated with traditional paper cuttings, sugar skulls and marigold flowers. To honor deceased family members, the Avalon community and its visitors are encouraged to contribute images, mementos, favorite foods and beverages of family members and friends to be placed on the ofrenda. 11/3  34th Annual Catalina Island Triathlon & Duathlon
Catalina Island is one of the most beautiful and unique settings to host a triathlon. The Catalina Island Triathlon & Duathlon attracts athletes who are looking to compete in that last race before the winter season break. This is a unique and beautiful setting that will challenge the beginner and thrill the veteran.

Eco-Marathon, Half-Marathon, 10K, Kid’s Run. Voted the Best Trail Run on RunnersWorld.com. Routes start in Avalon at 8am, course closes at 4pm. Volunteers welcome & appreciated. Spectrum Sports Management.

12/1  25th Annual "Shop Catalina" Night
A one-night shopping extravaganza with holiday discounts, musical entertainment and prize drawings from 5pm-9pm. Shop Catalina Night kicks off with a holiday tree lighting ceremony on Wrigley Stage at 5pm. Have your picture taken with Santa when you bring two canned goods to the food drive at El Galleon from 6pm-8:30pm. More Info: 310.510.1520

12/2  Catalina Christmas Tree Decorating Contest

Join us for special performance and a screening of A Christmas Story in the Avalon Casino Theatre. Set in the 1940s, the film follows nine-year-old Ralphie Parker who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Much to his dismay, his pleas are rejected by his mother, his teacher and even a department store Santa Claus, all giving him the same warning: “You’ll shoot your eye out.” As Christmas Day approaches, Ralphie does his best to keep his hopes up. 12/31  Ring in the New Year at El Galleon’s Annual Mardi Gras Karaoke Party
